WhatsApp AI Agent — Build It Free
Your number. Your knowledge base. Your AI. No credit card. No code.
If you run any kind of business in India, WhatsApp is where your customers are. Most D2C founders, coaches, consultants, and freelancers I know spend hours every week answering the same 10 questions on WhatsApp — pricing, availability, how to order, what's included.
A WhatsApp AI Agent fixes that. It answers for you, 24/7, from a knowledge base you define. And the best part: you can build one for free, with zero code, in under 10 minutes — using YCloud. This is the complete, step-by-step guide.
An AI agent connected to your WhatsApp Business number that automatically responds to incoming messages using your business information — product details, pricing, FAQs, policies. When someone needs a human, it hands off to you.
What You Need Before You Start
You need three things — all free. Think of them like Russian nesting dolls: each one sits inside the next.
Meta Business Manager = your office building. Facebook Page = your company's reception desk. WhatsApp Business Account = the phone at the desk that your AI answers.
- Use a personal Facebook account you actually own (Meta will verify it)
- Your phone number must be active on WhatsApp Business App before you connect it
- A real business email address is recommended (not Gmail)
Step 1 — Set Up Meta Business Manager
Go to business.facebook.com and create your business account. This is free and takes 5 minutes.
Click Create account. Sign in with your personal Facebook account — Meta uses this to verify it's a real human.
Business name, your name, and a business email. Use the name your customers know you by.
Meta sends a confirmation email. Click the link. Your Business Manager is now active.
Go to Business Settings → Business Info. Add your address, phone number, and website. This helps with Meta's verification process later.
Keep this tab open — you'll come back to it. Now create your Facebook Business Page.
Step 2 — Create a Facebook Business Page
Your Facebook Page is the public face of your business on Meta's platform. Even if you never post on Facebook, you need it because WhatsApp Business accounts are linked to Pages.
Or go to Meta Business Manager → Pages → Add → Create a new Page.
Enter your Page name (your business name) and select a category. Pick something general like "Product/Service" or "Entrepreneur" if unsure.
Use your logo or a clean photo. A complete Page looks more professional and helps with Meta's verification.
In Meta Business Manager → Pages → Add → Add a Page you own. Select the Page you just created.
Next: connect your WhatsApp Business number.
Step 3 — Connect Your WhatsApp Business Number
This is the step most people get confused about. There are two ways to use WhatsApp with Meta's API. You want Coexistence mode — it lets you keep using your regular WhatsApp Business App while also connecting to YCloud.
Coexistence vs. API-only — What's the Difference?
| Feature | Coexistence (Use This ✓) | API Only |
|---|---|---|
| Keep using WA Business App | ✓ Yes | ✗ No |
| Keep chat history | ✓ Yes | ✗ No |
| Can still reply manually | ✓ Yes | Limited |
| Connect to YCloud | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| Setup complexity | Easy | Medium |
How to Connect Your Number via YCloud (Coexistence)
Go to ycloud.com and sign up. No credit card required.
In the YCloud dashboard, find the WhatsApp Accounts section and click Add WhatsApp Business Number.
YCloud will ask you to scan a QR code with your WhatsApp Business App. Open WhatsApp Business → Settings → Linked Devices → Link a Device → scan the QR.
YCloud will prompt you to log in to Meta and authorise the connection. Select your Business Manager account and Facebook Page.
YCloud shows your number as Active. Your existing WhatsApp Business App still works. You now have the API layer on top for AI features.
Why Use a Tool Like YCloud?
You have three paths to build a WhatsApp AI agent. Here's the honest comparison:
For most Indian solopreneurs and small businesses, YCloud is the right choice. It's free, instant, and you don't need to understand anything technical. You can always graduate to n8n workflows later — see our guide on building an AI SaaS agency in India for when you're ready to scale.

Step 4 — Build Your AI Agent in YCloud
With your WhatsApp number connected, here's how to build the actual AI agent. This takes about 10 minutes.
Go to AI Agent → Create Agent. Give it a name (e.g. "Priya from The Solo Entrepreneur"), a role, and a personality. This is what the AI "becomes" in your WhatsApp conversations.
This is what the AI knows and answers from. Add:
- Your product/service descriptions and pricing
- FAQs you answer most often
- Shipping, return, or cancellation policies
- How to buy / book / enrol
- Your contact details and working hours
Go to WhatsApp Accounts → Number Settings → Assignment. Set it exactly like this:
AI Agent → Your agent name → ACTIVE ✓Ask someone who has never messaged your WhatsApp Business number before to send a message. The AI Agent should reply automatically within seconds.
In AI Agent → Skills, add a handoff skill so the agent transfers to you when someone says things like "talk to a human" or "speak to [your name]".
Go-Live Checklist
- WhatsApp Business App number connected to YCloud
- AI Agent Profile configured — name, role, personality set
- Knowledge Base populated with your business info
- Assignment Rules: Priority 1 & 2 OFF, Priority 3 → AI Agent ACTIVE
- Tested with a fresh number — AI responds correctly
- Tested 3–4 different questions from your knowledge base
- Tested an off-topic question — AI handles gracefully
- Human handoff skill configured and tested
Common Issues & Fixes
Priority 2 is likely ON and routing to you. Go to Assignment Rules → turn Priority 2 OFF.
Go to their conversation in the Inbox → Resolve it → ask them to message again fresh.
Knowledge base needs more detail. Add the specific Q&A it got wrong and re-test.
Update WhatsApp Business App to version 2.24.17 or above from Play Store / App Store.
What to Do After It's Live
Once your AI Agent is running, here's how to get more from it:
- Iterate your knowledge base weekly. Every question the agent fumbles is a new entry to add. After 2 weeks, 90%+ of queries will be handled perfectly.
- Add a broadcast campaign. Use YCloud's broadcast feature to send updates to your contact list — new products, sales, announcements. No extra tool needed.
- Build automation workflows. Once you're comfortable, try connecting YCloud with n8n for advanced automation — auto-tagging leads, syncing to Google Sheets, sending invoice PDFs. See our post on no-code SaaS ideas for India for inspiration.
- Offer this as a service. You just learned something 99% of Indian business owners don't know how to do. Setting up WhatsApp AI Agents for other businesses is a real AI consulting service you can charge ₹15,000–₹50,000 for.
Setting up WhatsApp AI Agents is a genuine productised service. Local restaurants, D2C brands, coaches, and SMEs will pay ₹15,000–₹50,000 for a setup + ₹5,000/month for maintenance. If this interests you, read our digital marketing agency guide for the full business model.
